Knight’s Companies hosts annual Truck Rodeo at Ashley Ridge High School

by | Jun 5, 2023

SUMMERVILLE, SC — Knight’s Redi-Mix and Trucking divisions came together at Ashley Ridge High School on Saturday, May 20th, for the company’s annual internal competition event, the Knight’s Companies Truck Rodeo.

The Truck Rodeo is a family-friendly event, where delivery professionals test their commercial driving skills and knowledge through a written test, pre-trip truck inspection, and an extensive driving course.  19 Delivery Professionals from Knight’s Redi-Mix and Knight’s Trucking, maneuvered straight trucks and concrete mixer trucks through a driving course constructed, managed, and judged by over 35 Knight’s Companies employee volunteers. Employees, along with their families and friends, enjoyed a front row view of the driving course, food trucks, music, and entertainment.

Concrete Delivery Professionals, Baron Lewis, Kerry Richardson, and Gilbert Morales were the top three performers for the Redi-Mix division. All three will head to Charlotte, NC, on August 19th, to represent Knight’s Redi-Mix at the regional mixer truck rodeo competition, organized by the Carolinas Ready Mixed Concrete Association (CRMCA).

“This was my first Knight’s Rodeo experience.  I helped deliver a truck to the regionals competition last year, and that was my first time seeing what the rodeo is all about. I decided on that trip last year, that I wanted to represent Knight’s at the CRMCA Rodeo in 2023, so I signed up for ours and brought home the first place buckle, just like I’d planned.  I’m going to take Knight’s all the way to nationals!” said Baron Lewis.

Material Delivery Professionals, D’Angelo Saxon and Jay Washington, were awarded first and second place, respectively, for Knight’s Trucking division. Saxon brought home the first place rodeo buckle with only a few months of commercial driving experience, after his supervisor Mark Coleman, encouraged him to compete. “I was hesitant to participate in the rodeo because I’d only had my CDL for three months, but Mark Coleman told me he believed I have what it takes to win it, so I went for it and signed up to participate.  Once I got there and saw the fun environment and supportive crowd, my nerves went away and I did what I needed to do. Mark believed in me before I believed in myself. I’m so thankful he encouraged me to participate. I’ll treasure this rodeo buckle and the memories for years to come,” said Saxon.
